Production Sound Mixing for Television, Commercials, and Films

New Gear. Woo Hoo!!!

This summer has been busy, hot, and humid! I've spent the past 3 months in southern Alabama working as the Sound Supervisor for a new History Channel show. It's been a good time and I am looking forward to the next adventure!

As any good sound mixer does I have acquired new gear. The past 6 months has seen the addition of a Zaxcom Fusion 12 mixer and recorder, Zaxcom IFB transmitter and multiple receivers (confidence monitoring, director's headsets, etc), and many more channels of Zaxcom wireless lavs.

What this means for the productions I'm mixing for:

Zaxcom wireless units are the best there is. The sound quality and functionality of their 900 series blows away Lectrosonics; plain and simple. The Zaxcom 900LT transmitter has a MicroSD card that records timecode-stamped 24-bit, 48K audio files directly on the transmitter. So, in the event of a RF hit or the talent is out of range (or in a weird spot) there is never lost audio! The audio is always crystal clear, timecode stamped, and RF free.

In addition to numerous channels of Zaxcom wireless I have also added a Zaxcom Fusion 12 mixer/recorder. This unit records and mixes up to 12 channels of audio in the field at any frame rate. It is both a full featured cart-based recorder and a top-of-the-line mixer/recorder in the bag for reality TV or commercial work.

And for the directors, producers, clients, scripty, or anyone else who has the need to hear all of that wonderful audio: Zaxcom IFB kit! Not only can you hear the talent with full audio resolution, each receiver reads out frame-accurate timecode so anyone can take proper notes for post. Time and money in post is always at a premium so these new receivers make it easy to know EXACTLY when that key line was said or when that golden moment happened. It sure beats having to estimate the camera and audio timecode! This saves you lots of time and money in post production.
